It may be that your scanner has some sort of sensor that won’t let it scan when the lid is open. Maybe try looking for where the lid would normally close onto and if there’s a hole then put a pen in there. Otherwise maybe turn off the lights.
Also if it’s asking for you to reset it, it could be that you’re moving too much? I don’t know what else to suggest! Why can’t you take a photograph? Squash your face against some glass and take a photo from the other side. Instant scanner-like picture :)

I’m assuming you have a good reason for not taking a photograph with a digital still camera, like you want that face pressed up against the glass effect with outside light streaming it etc. Why not photocopy your face then scan the photocopy. It could look cool (or not).

Ask your friend how they did it. I’m a computer technician by trade and it sounds difficult to me. Perhaps they took a digital photo of their face and uploaded it to their computer? Perhaps they are pulling your leg when they say they scanned themselves?

We used to do it with photocopiers.
You need a dark room, a blanket over your head completely covering your head and the scanner, you have to put the side of your face flat on the scanner. Hit the scan button.
    Warning..eyesight damage could occur…

Your scanner probably has a feature that will not allow it to work if it thinks something is wrong, such as someone’s face being on it instead of a piece of paper. Try a different scanner.

take a picture with a digital camera and xfer the jpeg over to the computer
