I Got A New Computer At Work And Cannot Add/remove Programs, Delete Shortcuts, Etc.?

Submitted by admin on August 22, 2009 – 7:42 pm19 Comments

They have really restricted what we can do. I could not even install the software fro a printer/scanner because i was not an administrator. Is there any way I can make myself one or make the computer otherwise allow me to install things?

Flirt with the IT staff to get the admin password.
If they are the stereotypical computer geeks, forget the flirting, bring them Coke and Twinkies.

What a looney question. They don’t make you administrator so they can keep looneys from installing insignificant non-work-related stuff on their business equipment.
    Geeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!! Grow up !!!!

  • sydney_2 says:

They have “locked” down your computer. There is no way around it unless you have the administrator’s password. The lock down is coded into your network login.
You will have to be nice nice with I.T. : )
    Good Luck!

After U do all that and infect the system…When they trace it back 2 U…Bye Bye JOB.

not really in an legal way. Maybe get to know an IT person and have them do everything for you? Brownies and bribes are usually good convincers. lol…
    Sorry!

You need to speak with your IT department. Companies restrict the ability of its workers to change or adjust setting on the work computers because of the money and resource drain it causes when someone who doesn’t know what they are doing damages the network or corrupts a server.
It is a one size fits all but a necessary tool to ensure 100% compliance by its workers. Talk with your IT department and have them install the drivers and other hardware devices you need.

You can give yourself access, but you would need access to a user name and password with administrative rights. You might want to discuss this problem with your head of IT and see if they can remove some of the restrictions.

  • Gaming God says:

    Not really.
You need to get permissions from your IT department, only an admin can make you an admin.
There are reasons for this type of security,so if they didn’t give you permission to add and remove programs, that is part of your companies security policy.http://www.takemetojapan.com

No, there is no way to fool the system into thinking you are an administrator. You would have to get with your I.T. department to install anything that you need to have to do your job.

  • Rev. Still Monkeys says:

try to right click my computer, go to manage, go to local users and groups and create a new user that is an administrator, then logon with that new acct…..or…try to log off…then log back on but not on the domain…just log on the local computer…usually you have three boxes, username,pw, domain……change the domain box to “this computer” and try to logon…

  • Michael H says:

Well then you’ll have to be the admin.

  • Webman says:

It seems as though you have been limited access by the adminitstrator. Either contact a person who is one, get the password to the administrator. NOt much else you can do.

  • frisco says:

Unfortunately, no. If you aren’t an administrator, you can’t install anything. You’ll need to have the system administrator do it for you.

  • duffcapr says:

Plan A: Download a password cracker. Burn it to a CD. Boot from that CD and you’ll find the local administrator password. Then do whatever you like. Then look for another job, after you get found out and sacked.
Plan B: Accept that these are the rules, and you’ll have to ask someone else to install software for you.

  • Schifree says:

you would have to speak to the administrator and get him/her to change your permissions

  • BenC The Music Man says:

Sure. Get the training you need, apply for a promotion, and make sure that you uphold the group policies of your company.

  • Jim T says:

Don’t get into trouble, go talk to someone in your IT department. They are the ones that handle installation of software, programs, etc.

  • Hugh J's Daddy says:

you need to log in as the administrator which is prolly whoever created the restrictions thats why they have proxys for surfing the web, because work/school computers are annoying

  • Coz says:

If you are meant to be the administrator on this computer, you should talk to your IT department and let them know you are not an administrator on your own machine and they will fix it for you. Only another administrator can make you an administrator. Let your tech department handle it.
